COURSE AIMS:
The course is designed to clarify the role of the poolside assistant during school swimming lessons. It includes essential skills to support the swimming teacher in the event of an emergency. Those completing the training receive a certificate of competence recognised by Dudley.  This Certificate will be valid for 2 years and is compulsory for all Dudley LEA poolside assistants

The course covers:

• Understanding the importance of Pool Operating Procedures and the role of an assistant on the poolside
• Assessment and management of the unconscious casualty
• Performing child Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
• Recognising a bather in distress
• Using pool rescue equipment
• Supporting the swimming teacher in a pool emergency
• Assisting with the rescue and recovery of an unconscious casualty from the water

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?
The course is open to anyone who assists with school/other programmed session of swimming. Although those attending the course will be asked to enter shallow water (1 metre deep) there is no requirement to be able to swim

CAN I OBTAIN A QUALIFICATION?
Those completing the course successfully will be issued with a Certificate of Competence recognised by Dudley

HOW ARE THE CANDIDATES ASSESSED FOR A QUALIFICATION?
Assessment is ongoing throughout the training session.  Take a look at the syllabus

HOW LONG DOES THE COURSE LAST?
Approximately 2 hours in the classroom, 1 hour in the pool

DO I NEED ANYTHING FOR THE FIRST CLASS?
Swim wear (essential), tee-shirt, (optional - to be worn over swimwear in the pool area) towels, whistle, notepad and pen.
